Our Story

Two sisters, two skills, one lockdown.

Fell and Broom came to be, almost by accident. When the pandemic came, we found ourselves bored, alone and needing an outlet. A doctor and a PhD student, the pandemic changed our lives in a big way… We suddenly couldn’t see each other anymore or our family, work became incredibly challenging and fed up of Netflix and social media, we sought a new hobby.

One could knit and one could crochet, so we swapped skills. We taught each other via Facetime and zoom, left parcels of wool on the doorstep and before we knew it, we were actually making beautiful cosy knitwear. Fast forward 6 months and our hobby was a little out of hand, we’d made so many beautiful items and we wanted to share them, thus Fell and Broom was born. An instagram account to post pictures of our knitwear, to share and to sell and cover the costs of what we’d made.

Then we added the third sister into the mix, The Red Shepherdess. She tested all our headwear, come rain or shine, through sheep muck and grime and soon people started asking ‘Oi Red, where’s your headband from.’ Confident in our knitwear, we started to sell more and more and people started to share our things too, and the rest as they say ‘is history.’

Born out of a crazy pandemic, from this little corner of Cumbria, our knitwear is handmade, in cosy evening infront of the fire, with a whole lotta’ love, from…

Our Values

Support Small

It hasn’t taken us long to realise, that Fell and Broom’s journey ought to about more than just, two sisters knitting hats in their spare time.
There is something so special in these small local businesses that seem to thrive despite the odds.
Businesses using local British resources, competing against machine-made synthetic fast fashion fibres and teaming up to support eachother.

As soon as we started Fell and Broom we felt that ‘magic’, small businesses reaching out to offer us support and sharing our work and we knew from that point on, that we wanted a part in this too. That is why all of our labels, stamps and packaging are made by other British businesses, out-sourcing to smaller companies wherever possible. We buy amazing patterns and yarns from other British small retailers and use British only companies to source all of our fibres.

Go Green

It is important to use that minimise our carbon footprint wherever possible, eliminate the use of single-use plastics and reduce waste.
That is why, you won’t find any plastic amongst our packaging, our cards are made from recycled paper, our tags are made from real leather and our boxes are sustainably sourced and fully recyclable and biodegradable. Were possible we use 100% wool fibres or yarns with acrylic-wool blend and will soon be launching our very own Fell and Broom Wool, made from our own sheep fleeces, right off the farm and processed in a small British mill.

Our Dream

Our own journey has shown us how much enjoyment and value having a hobby can bring, at a time where everything seems different and unfamiliar, Fell and Broom has truly been a blessing for us. Lots of us were taught to knit by our grannies or mums, but we maybe stopped because we don’t have time, or need a little help or an outlet. We want to encourage people back into these more traditional hobbies, using this amazing natural fibre that is wool, to make truly beautiful items that will last a lot longer than the things you could buy on the highstreet.

That’s our dream… a cooperative. A community of people who love to knit, to crochet, to create! A place for others to get on board, to have a go, re-learn a skill and share their knowledge.  To provide an outlet to celebrate British wool, these amazing skills and the beautiful produce we can create. Because Fell and Broom was made to be so much more, than just two sisters knitting… and we can’t wait to see were we are headed!
